Local Spotlight: Hygge Coffee Bar, Berwick, ME

Some places feel like a discovery even after you’ve been going for years. For me, Hygge Coffee Bar is exactly that — a true hidden gem in our Berwick community.

I first met owner Tracey Deprey in 2021, when she opened a tiny take-out coffee window in Berwick. It was essentially an adorable closet with a big dream behind it. From day one, it was obvious she wasn’t just serving coffee — she was building a community. Her focus has always been on high-quality drinks, thoughtful customer service, and getting to know the people she serves.

After a brief hiatus, Hygge Coffee Bar reopened in February 2024 inside Badwolfe Butcher Shop at 12 Sullivan Street in Berwick. The new location feels like the perfect fit: cozy, welcoming, and full of life.

Coffee That Feels Creative and Personal

I’m usually a creature of habit and stick to a mocha (hot or iced), but Tracey makes it very easy to branch out. One standout is the Iced Truffle Latte — made with Harris Farm chocolate milk, chocolate syrup, and chocolate cold foam. It’s basically dessert disguised as coffee.

What makes Hygge especially fun is the creativity. Seasonal and specialty drinks rotate regularly, with playful flavors like Lucky Charm Latte, Dubai Chocolate Latte, and Carrot Cake Latte.

If you’ve had a drink while traveling and miss it, there’s a good chance Tracey will try to recreate it for you. That kind of personal touch is rare and incredibly appreciated.

She also carries an impressive variety of milk options — from familiar favorites to unique choices like macadamia milk and even corn milk — making the menu feel inclusive and customizable for everyone.

Hygge proudly serves Carrabassett Coffee espresso and prioritizes local ingredients whenever possible, which shines through in the quality of every drink. Customers often rave about the inventive lattes, welcoming atmosphere, and the way the owner connects with every person who visits.

Beyond Coffee

Hygge isn’t just about drinks. You’ll find fresh local pastries, artisan bagels, and quick breakfast options. Within minutes, you can grab a breakfast sandwich or a bagel with cream cheese to pair with your coffee and head out the door — or linger and enjoy the atmosphere.

A Community Gathering Spot

One of the things I love most about Hygge is the location inside Badwolfe. There’s always a steady flow of people, making it the perfect place to run into neighbors, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy a moment of connection.

For me, Hygge Coffee Bar is more than a coffee stop — it’s a small but meaningful pillar of our community. It creates those organic, everyday moments where you bump into familiar faces and feel a little more connected to the place you live.
