A Taste of Dover: Charro’s Mexican Cuisine
This month’s review is of Charro’s Mexican Cuisine in downtown Dover, NH.
I first came to Charro’s about a month ago when a friend was visiting from Houston. Located in one of downtown Dover’s brick buildings, the restaurant has a warm, inviting atmosphere with natural wood tones and black wrought-iron accents.
I came in with one thing in mind: a margarita. Then I spotted the espresso martinis on the menu and, well… the margarita would have to wait! 😂
We started with chips, salsa and guacamole, which were both delicious. Since that first visit, I’ve been back twice — including for my birthday, when I finally tried the Charro’s Margarita. The staff even sang “Happy Birthday” to me at the bar and brought me a shot of tequila. Now that is how you celebrate!
But it was the food that really hooked me.
I ordered the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo — sautéed shrimp with mushrooms in garlic sauce, served with white rice, salad and avocado. The shrimp were perfectly seared, the garlic sauce was delicious, and the fresh citrus made the dish feel light and fresh. I’ve been thinking about it ever since!
I’ve also tried the shrimp tacos, which are topped with a delicious chipotle crema. Definitely another favorite.
One thing I love about the menu is that there are some unexpected options, too. Along with the traditional Mexican dishes, you’ll find seafood and even clam chowder — which feels like a pretty perfect combination of Mexico and New England.
And then there’s the tres leches. I rarely have room for dessert, so I took it home the first time. Now I order it every time I go. It’s that good.
My Charro’s Picks
🍤 Must try: Camarones al Mojo de Ajo
🌮 Also loved: Shrimp Tacos with Chipotle Crema
🍹 Drink: Charro’s Margarita (although the espresso martini is a close second!)
🍰 Don’t skip: Tres Leches
Three visits in a month probably says enough — Charro’s has officially made my Dover dinner rotation. And I’m already looking forward to trying something new on my next visit!
